Competency 2: Identification of FASD and Diagnosis of FAS

Description

Male doctor with young patient

This competency presents diagnostic references and criteria for fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), describes disorders related to prenatal alcohol exposure, identifies signs and symptoms of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) that may be confused with other disorders, describes areas of the brain affected by prenatal alcohol exposure, reviews diagnostic procedures, and discusses professional values and ethics related to diagnosis of FASD.

The addiction professional needs to be familiar with signs and symptoms of FASD in order to make appropriate referrals for diagnosis. However, addiction professionals cannot diagnose these disorders themselves.
