Women with an FASD may appear to understand when they do not. They can often repeat information without understanding it. It is important to provide consistency and recheck the retention of information often. Ask the client to summarize what you have said. Review written material, such as rules, at each session. Do not assume that the client is familiar with a concept or can apply it because you have reviewed it multiple times. Remember, the only consistent thing about FASD is inconsistency. A client can know something on Monday and forget it on Tuesday. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
