Ongoing Assessment To Obtain Accurate Diagnosis

Some women with alcohol problems may also have an FASD and may need to be referred for diagnosis. Identifying FASD is crucial because it can affect the woman’s recovery and the treatment methods used (see Competency 3). At least one study has shown that prenatal alcohol exposure is a risk factor for substance abuse problems in adolescents,6 making diagnosis of an FASD critical in these clients. In addition, identifying co-occurring disorders is crucial to ensure appropriate treatment of all disorders.
