FASD Awareness Day 2009

Center staff and senior SAMHSA officials collaborated to observe the tenth annual FASD Awareness Day on September 9, 2009, with a focus on FASD as a cross-platform issue. The Center spotlighted this event on the homepage on its official Web site throughout the month of September 2009. In addition, a special exhibit and materials were developed for an all-day event at SAMHSA's headquarters in Rockville, Maryland to mark the occasion and stress the importance of FASD for mental health, substance abuse, and prevention experts. Featured speakers included SAMHSA's then-Acting Administrator Dr. Eric Broderick and CSAP Director Fran Harding.

The highlight of the day's activities was a series of presentations by selected Center subcontractors. Since early 2008, these and other providers have been implementing evidenced-based programs in real-world treatment settings across the United States. Speakers from California, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin shared success stories from their vital work in screening and diagnosing FASD, and also identifying women at risk of giving birth a child with an FASD and providing appropriate brief interventions and treatment. As FASD Awareness Day marked its tenth anniversary, these speakers were a clear sign that SAMHSA, the Center, and the field truly are working together to improve the quality of life for individuals and families impacted by FASD.
